Cuba and Latin America form closer ties despite the reluctance of Washington

The Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean States (CALC), held this week in Costa do Sauipe, in northeastern Brazil, marks the changing “political and ideological profile” that crosses all of South America. For the international press, this new scenario poses a rift between Latin America and Washington political concerns, and a narrowing of regional ties with Cuba as a standard.

The Mexican broadcaster Univision announced that Brazil will lead the diplomacy of the Organization of American States (OAS) to reinstate Cuba as a member. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on the subject: “Brazil will endeavor, with other countries, to revoke the act of exclusion of Cuba from the OAS.”

In the framework of a bilateral meeting between Cuba and Brazil, Lula also praised the inauguration of Cuban President Raul Castro, the Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean and the Rio Group, said, which shows that “Cuba wants to have a voice in the destiny of our region.”

The BBC notes that Latin America is calling on the lifting of economic sanctions against the Caribbean island that began 46 years ago. The declaration adopted at the extraordinary summit of the 33 countries attending  “is seen as an expression of independence in a time when U.S. influence in the region is at its lowest point,” says the middle of London.

For his part, Castro thanked continental solidarity and expressed willingness to hold talks with the new U.S. President Barack Obama, but “only after the lifting of the embargo and able to do so as equals.”

My Tanzanian Safari Vacation

One of the items at the top of my bucket list was to go on a safari. The time came when I was finally able to start planning my adventure. There are so many beautiful places you can go, it was an extremely difficult decision. I finally came to the conclusion that Tanzania, a country in Africa, would be my choice. Once I had selected my destination, I couldn’t wait to get started on my African lion safari adventure!

I chose a trip that included gorilla tracking plus a separate safari excursion. We first visited Volcanoes National Park to view the animals in their natural habitat. On our way to Serengeti National Park, we stopped by Lake Tanzania. Here we were able to observe a variety of birds including flamingos plus hippos and a multitude of different plant life. Once we arrived at our lodge, we relaxed and discussed with our guide about the big safari the next day. I was hoping to see an African lion, and he assured me that I wouldn’t be disappointed.

The morning of our adventure brought us perfect weather for animal watching. Our vehicle was a sturdy 4×4 and had a pop up roof to allow for easier viewing. All members of our group were able to have a window seat which was a definite plus. Our guide headed down a dirt path and eventually went off-road in search of wildlife. We were soon in the middle of a herd of gazelle, then off in the distance we heard a familiar sound. It was a roar of a lion! Our driver headed in that direction and we found a male with three females relaxing under the shade of a tree. At that point it was time to turn and head back to the lodge. On the way we encountered elephants, zebras, and a couple of rhinos.

What a memorable experience! I am so glad I was finally able to scratch this one off my life list.

Certification Standards for Organic Clothing Sold in the United States

When buying organic baby clothes, you know you’re buying a garment that’s better for baby and for the environment. But what exactly does the term “organic” mean on the label? With more businesses getting into the organic clothing and household textiles game, there are specific sets of criteria that give manufacturers the right to display the organic label.  These requirements can vary with the country of origin where the product was made and where the products are being sold.  It boils down to the fact that any textile, whether finished or processed, can promote itself as certified organic only if it meets either USDA organic textile requirements or those of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Here’s a brief review of how the standards work.

Here in the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture oversees its National Organic Program (USDA’s NOP) for certifying organic textiles, among other products, while internationally; the Global Organic Textile Standard dictates organic qualifications for fibers.

On May 20, 2011 the USDA NOP’s Policy Memorandum “Labeling of Textiles that Contain Organic Ingredients” was issued to clarify exact labeling criteria for products containing organic fibers like organic cotton, organic wool and organic linen.  It requires that in order for any processed textiles to be labeled as “organic”, they must meet third-party certification criteria and all fibers labeled as “organic” used in the product need to be certified to the National Organic Program (NOP) standards.

Additionally, this policy allows that any textiles that adhere to the Global Organic Textile Standard may also be sold as “organic” within the United States, although they cannot reference NOP certification or carry a USDA seal of organic authenticity.  

Comparatively, GOTS is the strict international standard for the whole post-harvesting process (this includes the cleaning, spinning, dyeing, manufacturing, etc.) for textiles comprised of organic fibers. Its criteria encompasses both ecological and social practices, which include banning implementation of toxic chemicals, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and exploitation of laborers. At the same time, it calls for careful management of all aspects of the manufacturing process, such as decent working conditions and the use of environmentally responsible waste water treatment methods.
